MY MOTHER WOULD BE PROUD

I cried last night. I remembered my mother's words on the chances of a black man becoming
President, something to the effect of, not in her lifetime & she was right.

But, she was uncertain if it would happen in mine. Actually she thought a woman & maybe a Jew would have a better chance of becoming Commander in Chief before a man of color.

Well, we all know today she was wrong.

Last night I heard a black woman say, she could now say with conviction to her son, he indeed could be anything he wanted when he grew up, even President of the United States.

I got up & went outside thinking that when I hit the pavement, it would feel different, look different, I don't know. And, in an odd way it did, at least for me.

The Civil Rights Act now really means something.

The world is now chiming in, saying we have entered the 21st century. We were just about the only country that had a problem electing a person of color or a woman to the highest position in government. They are not going to have any problems with our electoral decision.

There are some folks in our country, that just may have trouble taking it all into their wee tiny brains & mean little hearts. I think they watch a lot of Fox News Channel & believe everything Rush Limbaugh tells them.

I know in my heart, we have elected a good person, a Democrat, who will do his best for our country. But, the pressure on him will be great. Not because of the Middle East, the economy or any of the standard issues, but the onus rests on President Obama to change the haters. Yes, they still exist. All the stereotypes about people of color will fall on his shoulders.

I mentioned The Civil Rights Act, well, we as a country have to re up it every couple of years! Nearly 150 years after The Civil War & the end of slavery, we have a black President & he basically has to justify to a couple of yahoo's, why America's decision last night was right for the country. I do not envy his position.

I wish President Obama & his family, the best of luck in The White House & history.

Now, if we could maybe get a gay woman, who maybe could be Hispanic or something along those lines, we really would make headway on some hardcore haters ideas!

Wish I could be as excited about this as you, but I know too much about the man's political history to believe we've elected anything but a mediocrity with a slight tan. Mind you, the alternative would have been much, much worse. But I think anyone who's thinking that a Brand New Day is dawning and everything's going to get all better now that Obama will be in the White House is going to end up sorely disappointed. He'll end up letting a lot of dreamers down.

Oh, and as for that African American woman who can now tell her son he can do anything... she still can't say that to her daughter, can she?

Dearest Alikhat,

you do have a legitimate point buried within your condescending, petty, juvenile, petulant, and frankly stupid-as-shit response.

care to enlighten us to this shady history you hinted at?

don't get me wrong; i respect your opinion and i agree that there will be many disappointed voters. i simply detest stupidity in general and you have clearly missed the point of wendy's posting. as for your comment concerning the daughter of the hypothetical african-american: are you serious? no really, are you fucking serious? i'm not a crazed obama-fanatic. i'm a hillary man. but i must ask you: what are you on, and why aren't you sharing?

as for the "slight tan" remark: go fuck yourself. fuck you right in the ear.

for the record, i cried a wee bit, too that night. now americans just need to get over their hang-ups over gays, sex, and religion. in a more sophisticated america, electing a black man to office would not be such a big fucking deal. it's almost a shame that it is. i'm not prepared to call anyone mediocre until i observe their service in office. i never bought into the whole "hope" thing myself. but you know what? Hope gets shit done.
cheers.
